Firetrace Direct and Indirect Suppression Units

Both direct and indirect systems are available in low and high-pressure functionality for areas of any size. A fire suppression specialist can help determine which system is right for your application.

Direct and Indirect Suppression, what’s the difference?

Direct release system: A local application system that uses the Firetrace detection tubing to both sense the fire and deliver the agent to the protected space. When exposed to fire the tubing bursts, forming a nozzle that directs the suppression agent, dousing the fire with clean agent gas. Unlike water or carbon dioxide, clean agents will not damage sensitive electronics. For safeguarding electrical cabinets, it is advisable to use direct release systems. 

Indirect release system: A total flooding system that uses the Firetrace detection tubing only as a sensing device. When the system detects a threat, it actively transports the agent into the secure space through pipes or hoses equipped with fixed nozzles. This versatile technology finds applications in diverse settings such as electrical cabinets, data centers, and CNC machines, ensuring the protection of valuable equipment without causing any damage.


DLP (Direct Loss of Pressure) Novec 1230

Designed for use with 3M™ Novec™ 1230 Fire Protection Fluid.


The system employs Firetrace Detection and Activation Tubing (FDT), strategically connected to the cylinder valve’s upper section. This FDT, pressurized with dry nitrogen, serves as a dynamic, temperature-sensitive element. It functions as a seamless linear thermal detector, rupturing instantly upon exposure to flames. After the FDT ruptures, it transforms into a nozzle at the burst site, facilitating the seamless flow of the Novec 1230 agent This ensures an effective distribution of the extinguishing agent across the protected area. Upon system activation, the pressure switch proves versatile, signaling system discharge, initiating ventilation shutdown, cutting off electrical power, and executing other necessary actions. Each assembly comes equipped with a straight siphon tube and is exclusively mountable in a vertical (upright) position. Meeting DOT requirements, all cylinder valves of various sizes feature a pressure relief (rupture disc) device for added safety.

General Specifications


The concentration of the discharged agent within the enclosure housing the fire hazard dynamically determines the coverage extent. Notably, the DLP system does not release its entire content within a span of 10 seconds. The DLP system does not discharge all its content within 10 seconds.

Suppression Agent

The suppression agent used in Firetrace self-contained automatic indirect fire suppression units is CF₃CF₂C(O)CF(CF₃)₂, more commonly known as 3M™ Novec™ 1230 Fire Protection Fluid. Novec 1230 is a colorless low odor fluid, low in toxicity, electrically nonconductive, leaves no residue, and is an extremely effective fire suppression agent.

• System Operating Pressure: 195 psig [13.4 bar] at 70°F [21°C]

Common Applications

Considered safe to humans if discharged in an occupied space. Ideally suited to protect electrical panels and server racks.


ILP FK-5-1-12 Systems

With the developments of the AIM Act phasing down the usage of HFCs, including FM-200™, a common fire suppression agent, and 3M™ announcing they will cease production of Novec 1230™, Firetrace has responded by drastically enhancing and improving our ILP offerings using FK-5-1-12.

Firetrace’s FK-5-1-12 ILP systems offer a significant performance improvement over our Novec 1230™ ILP systems and carry the UL listing and FM approval. Specifically this brings the performance in-line with our FM-200 ILP systems to ensure the same protection for high-risk equipment.


DOT Pre-Engineered 360 PSI ILP Automatic Suppression Systems

Designed for use with ABC Dry Chemical Powder

Firetrace’s Pre-Engineered 360 PSI ILP Automatic Suppression Systems are meticulously crafted, produced, and rigorously tested in facilities certified to ISO 9001:2015 standards. Adhering to the relevant DOT/TC requirements, every system cylinder bears the appropriate stamp.

Each system is furnished with a sleek black anodized valve, featuring a pressure gauge for real-time cylinder pressure monitoring. It also incorporates a quarter-turn ball valve that interfaces seamlessly with the Firetrace Detection Tubing. The valve’s piston, equipped with a static seal, adeptly maintains agent pressure within the cylinder while facilitating pressure equalization on both sides of the piston.

Upon automatic or manual activation, the pressure above the piston is swiftly released, prompting the piston to smoothly slide to its fully open position. This action allows the discharge of ABC dry chemical powder through the designated discharge ports. Furthermore, each assembly comes complete with a straight siphon tube and is exclusively mountable in a vertical (upright) position.

Operating Range

Operating Pressure: 360 psig at 70 °F [24.8 bar at 21.1 °C]

Temperature Range: -40 °F to 130 °F [-40 °C to 54.4 °C]

Suppression Agent

The suppression agent used in Firetrace Pre-Engineered 360 PSI ILP Automatic Suppression Units is mono ammonium phosphate, more commonly known as ABC dry chemical powder. NFPA 17 incorporates ABC dry chemical powder, subject to thorough evaluation and approval for use in occupied areas, contingent upon the implementation of requisite safety measures. This finely divided powder, treated for water repellency, possesses the unique capability of being fluidized and free-flowing. In fact this characteristic enables it to be effortlessly discharged through discharge piping and nozzles, propelled by an expellant gas. When discharged, ABC dry chemical powder will drift through the air and settle on surrounding surfaces.

Automatic Indirect Suppression Unit

Designed for use with ABC Dry Chemical Powder


Every system features a nickel-plated brass valve, a pressure gauge for real-time monitoring of cylinder pressure, and a quarter-turn ball valve seamlessly interfacing with the Firetrace Detection Tubing. The valve bore houses a piston fitted with a static seal, effectively containing the agent under pressure within the cylinder while facilitating pressure equalization on both sides of the piston. Upon automatic or manual activation, the release of pressure from the top assembly prompts the internal piston to smoothly slide into its fully open position. This action enables the discharge of the ABC dry chemical agent through the two designated outlets. Specifically, Firetrace meticulously outfit each assembly with a straight siphon tube, dedicating it exclusively to vertical (upright) mounting.

Common Applications

ABC Powder, an approved substance in Firetrace systems. It is a finely divided powder specifically endorsed for combating Class B (liquid and gas) as well as Class C (electrical) fires. Ideally suited to vehicles and CNC (Computer Numerical Control) Machines.


High Pressure CO2 Systems

CO2 fire suppression systems offer versatility, allowing for deployment in either a total enclosure or a localized application.
In a total enclosure scenario, the system forcefully releases the complete volume of CO2 into the confined space, effectively saturating it. Conversely, in a local application, CO2 is strategically directed to intensify suppression efforts focused on a specific component or equipment, such as an EDM Machine. Remarkably, CO2 distinguishes itself as the only gaseous agent with the capability of being selectively applied in this manner.

CO2 can be stored in two ways:

  1. High-pressure spun steel cylinders (known as HPCO2 suppression systems)
  2. Low-pressure light wall refrigerated tanks (known as LPCO2 suppression systems)

Firetrace’s CO2 fire suppression system is highly versatile, available for use in a wide range of scenarios. To suppress a variety of fire hazards, including total flooding and local fire protection applications. It relies on sensitive control panels to quickly detect fire before it spreads.

How the system works

  1. Our high-pressure fire suppression system releases a CO2 discharge that penetrates all areas within a protected enclosure in seconds.
  2. This lowers the level of oxygen below the combustion point, preventing a fire from growing.
  3. The CO2 discharge also leaves no residue, eliminating the need for agent cleanup and helping reduce downtime.

Environmental considerations

Always use caution when considering a CO2 fire protection system because a person must never occupy the protected areas. Even small amounts of CO2 can be harmful or fatal if inhaled. Generally, CO2 fire suppression systems flood the protected space with a 34% concentration of CO2. A 7.5% concentration is considered hazardous to humans.

Given the potential health risks associated with elevated levels of CO2 released during suppression system activation, several life safety measures are implemented within and around protected spaces. A notable device in this regard is a pneumatic siren, strategically employed to promptly alert personnel to the imminent discharge of CO2 from the system. This precautionary mechanism aims to ensure swift response and safeguard the well-being of individuals in the vicinity. In addition to these safety mechanisms, it is critical to train all employees and personnel in the building on the health risks of a CO2 fire suppression system, as well as appropriate evacuation procedures in the event of a fire.
